a bit of media control

Guilty confession: I haven’t been listening regularly to the news for the past week or so.

I usually listen in the morning and evening, but I’ve strayed from my routine with the media coverage of the recession. I hadn’t thought much about it until I tuned in to the news last night, and was greeted by a human interest story about a locally-owned shop in Brookline preparing to close due to bankruptcy. It was speculated that in this economy, their employees may have to go work for Starbucks, if they can get jobs there. The people interviewed sounded too lost and despondent to say what their plans might be.

I sympathize with their situation more than is good for me. I also worry that listening to news like this spreads the fear and despair. So I’m taking a bit more control over my media consumption, for a time. I find reading headlines and articles, or watching newsclips online to be much less distressing than a background of radio chatter. I still love you NPR, but I need this little break in our relationship.
